Class Recap: Winkel Sneak Preview with Joncarl Lachman

Brunch fans rejoice! Chef, restaurateur and veteran COOK instructor Joncarl Lachman is opening a new breakfast and lunch spot in Center City. The restaurant will occupy the recently closed More Than Just Ice Cream space at 12th and Locust Streets. As for its name, Joncarl chose Winkel, which means ‘little shop’ in Dutch. Winkel will serve breakfast and lunch to start with the possibility of dinner service in the future. In addition to interesting Dutch-influenced breakfast dishes, Winkel will offer numerous soups as well as fresh, house-baked bread. Talk about comfort food! Joncarl treated sixteen eager COOK guests to a sneak preview of his restaurant with some dishes that will be on the menu at Winkel. Class Recap: Cuba Cooks with Guillermo Pernot

Guillermo Pernot, Chef/Partner of Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar, came into COOK last week to showcase his newest cookbook Cuba Cooks. Not only did Guillermo cook up five courses of Cuban-inspired dishes from his book, but he also signed a copy for each of our guests to go home with and enjoy! Guillermo was awarded the James Beard Award for best single subject for his last cookbook, ¡Ceviche!: Seafood, Salads and Cocktails with a Latino Twist, so we are so excited to have his latest book. Read on to see some of the dishes from Cuba Cooks come to life and learn a bit about Cuban cuisine as well.

Class Recap: COOKbook Author Series: “Dining In” with Alison Roman

Last Saturday we had the pleasure of welcoming into COOK the author of the wildly popular cookbook Dining In, Alison Roman. Alison previously was the Senior Food Editor at Bon Appétit Magazine and BuzzFeed, and her work has appeared in the The New York TimesCherry BombeDarling and Lucky Peach. After enjoying four courses straight out of her cookbook, COOK guests went home with a signed edition of Dining In as well as big smiles on their faces.  Taking a simple approach to cooking, Alison focuses on making recipes “highly cookable” and that is exactly what she demonstrated in her evening class.  Read on to see the beautiful dishes she prepared and learn more about Alison Roman and her cookbook!

Tis the season for hearty slow-cooked meat! December is almost here so that means it’s time to start planning those holiday feasts. The star of the holiday table: a large and ready-to-carve cut of meat that has been cooked for hours. I went to Reading Terminal Market to talk to a meat expert who also has great experience with family feasts and rich traditions. Frequent COOK instructor Nick Macri (aka Meat Man Macri) of La Divisa Meats comes from a Calabrian family, which helped shape his butcher shop. In this article, you’ll learn more about Nick’s Italian-rooted holiday traditions, how they inspired his shop, as well as the meats La Divisa offers for your own holiday feasts!

Class Recap: Some Like It Hot with Jane Guo and Nick Brozek of Jane G’s

Jane Guo, owner of Jane G’s, the popular Szechuan Chinese restaurant in Rittenhouse Square made her COOK debut this week. A hands on wonton-making lesson from Jane herself and some powerful cocktails from her partner Nick Brozek made this class a hit. Fresh off having the legendary Samuel L. Jackson eat at Jane G’s, Jane excitedly prepared some of the dishes that he loved from the restaurant. After experiencing Jane’s charm and cuisine, one can understand why Samuel L.
