Shift Drink: Celebrating National Drink Beer Day with Garage

As an industry worker zipping around on your feet all day, the best part of the day is enjoying a shift drink: a post-work alcoholic beverage to decompress, take a load off, and yes, enjoy a nice buzz before heading home. In this series, we’ll be exploring the many fantastic bar programs of Philadelphia where you can treat yourself after a hard day’s work. For this edition, I visited Garage on Passyunk Avenue ahead of National Beer Day on September 28th.

Let’s be honest. For beer lovers, every day is National Drink Beer Day. However, in case you want an official reason to knock back a brew or two, this Saturday is your day.

Located on the corner made famous by cheesesteak giants Pat’s and Geno’s, there might not be a better place for a bar that specializes in canned beverages. With over 300 cans, one can certainly find something that fits their palate. Have a hankering for a low ABV macro domestic? They’ve got you covered. Looking for a hop bomb? You will not be lacking in choices. If an English style cider is your speed, they’ve got that, too. And if you don’t exactly know what you want, all you have to do is ask Angelica, Matt, Mark or any of the other bartenders for guidance and they can guide you through the extensive list.Garage-Philly

Those bartenders are probably my favorite part of the Garage equation and among my favorites in the city. Having frequented this particular location for years (there’s another location in Fishtown at Frankford and Girard Avenues), I have a strong affinity for them. It almost feels like Cheers, but that may only be because I usually go late at night. Visit on a Friday night, on a Saturday night, or during/post an Eagles game, it will most assuredly be packed. Garage-Philly-3

This will quickly become a favorite watering hole of yours if only because it focuses solely on being that – a bar. There’s no kitchen but sometimes they have someone in the cart appropriately called Indacart, a free-standing street cart with a rotating schedule of food vendors. In case you go on a night where no one is posted there, have no fear. You can simply go to one of the aforementioned cheesesteak joints or your favorite to-go restaurant and bring food in with you.
