Session Cocktails

Get your Sunday Father’s Day activities started with a light cocktail from Session Cocktails. Local food and drink writer Drew Lazor and the editors of PUNCH put together this cocktail book to provide people with tons of low-alcohol drink options for casual day drinking, perfect for long, hot summer days. The book also includes advice on stocking a low-ABV home bar, tips for batching for a crowd, as well as the history of low-proof drinks. If this book interests you and/or your father, sign up for the July 8th session cocktails class with Drew and local bartender Jesse Cornell of Harper’s Garden. Guests will learn about low-proof cocktails, enjoy a happy-hour of drinks from the book and go home with a copy of Session Cocktails. This would be a perfect Father’s Day gift!

So if you’d like to loosen up with your pops without getting too crazy, look no further than Session Cocktails’ Old Hickory recipe, a drink that looks like an Old Fashioned but is much lighter, so you can have more than one!

The Beer Pantry

If your pops prefers hops to cocktails then The Beer Pantry is the book for him. Not only does this craft beer book guide you through different styles of beer, it also pairs beers with recipes designed to maximize your tastebuds. Adam Doyle, Executive Chef for the Brewer’s Association, and Michael Harlan Turkell, author/photographer, teamed up to create this beer connoisseur book.  With tasting notes, history on craft breweries, and pairing suggestions, The Beer Pantry is the perfect book for a dad that loves having a cold one. Try out this seasonal recipe for radishes dipped in hop butter for Father’s Day.

*For this recipe you will need hops; you can find them online or locally at home brew stores.

Radishes Dipped In Hop Butter

Ingredients

  • 2 bunches small radishes, preferably French Breakfast
  • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 2 to 3 wholecone hops or 2 teaspoons hop pellets
  • Pinch of freshly grated lemon zest
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Trim the bottom of each radish, make sure to leave any healthy tops intact, and set aside. In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat, then add the hops. Make sure that your heat is low enough that it will not break the butter mixture. Remove the pan from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Strain the hops out and discard. Transfer the butter to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and whip the butter until its light and fluffy. Alternatively you could whip it by hand with a whisk. Fold in the lemon zest and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Dip each of the radishes into the hop butter coating about half of the radish, unless your radishes are extra intense in flavor (or if you’re just feeling indulgent this Father’s Day). Using the back of a spoon, smooth out the butter and place the radishes on a parchment sheet in the fridge to cool. The butter will solidify and form a glossy, hoppy and delicious layer. Serve the radishes on a tray with a side of extra hop butter and get dipping!
