Shift Drink: The Good King Tavern… Summer Edition!

As an industry worker zipping around on your feet for hours, the best part of the day is enjoying a shift drink: a post-work alcoholic beverage to decompress, take a load off, and yes, enjoy a nice buzz before heading home to bed. In this series, we’ll be exploring the many fantastic bar programs of Philadelphia where you can treat yourself after a hard days work. Since yesterday was the Summer Solstice and we have nothing but warm weather in sight, we’ll be highlighting The Good King Tavern and their new secret patio.

Ah, summer… it’s about time you’re here! After a seemingly never-ending winter, it’s time to celebrate blue skies and sunshine with a cold drink outdoors. Thankfully The Good King Tavern just opened up their secret side patio earlier this month, so I headed to the corner of 7th and Kater Streets and made my way inside the bright blue French pub.

Upon entering The Good King, immediately in front of you are the food and beverage specials written on mirrors behind the bar. The specials change often, so be sure to check their website for an updated list. Duck wings with orange glaze and hazelnut, zucchini galette with a brie béchamel sauce were a couple of the offerings. After a long day of work, head in and sit down at the bar, pair their French fare with a drink and treat yourself.

How about dollar oysters and sparkling wine on a hot summer day? From Monday to Thursday from 5-7 PM it’s Buck-a-Shuck + Bubbles. That means $1 oysters, $6 coupes of bubbly, plus they always open one “fancy-shamncy bottle of bubbly” to pour at $10 a glass. As for drinks besides bubbly, The Good King Tavern has an extensive wine list, mostly from France but also a solid selection of imported and domestic wines as well. Check out the full wine list here. Oh and did I mention The Good King’s house rosé is back for summertime sipping?

Cocktails and draft beers change seasonally but Kenzinger and Kronenbourg Blanc, a French wheat beer brewed in Alsace, are always on draft. Among the current summer cocktail offerings, the Tavern has a très tropical drink called A Curious Thrill consisting of pineapple, coconut, dry vermouth, lime and absinthe.

Last, but certainly not least, is the newly opened secret patio! On the side of the blue building is an intimate gated bar, serving a separate list of cocktails than inside, but you can still order wine and beer from their indoor menu. Order a beverage and sit under the hanging lights on a breezy summer night for the ultimate relaxing evening. The patio is open Thursday through Sunday, so make some weekend plans with friends to drink on the Tavern’s cute patio!
