As an industry worker zipping around on your feet all day, the best part of the day is enjoying a shift drink: a post-work alcoholic beverage to decompress, take a load off, and yes, enjoy a nice buzz before heading home to bed. In this series, we’ll be exploring the many fantastic bar programs of Philadelphia where you can treat yourself after a hard day’s work. In this edition of shift drink we’re exploring a new Brooklyn-inspired sports bar, perfect for catching the Eagles vs Giants game this Sunday at 1 PM. Take a break from your Thanksgiving ravaged house and check out Sergeant York in Fishtown!
Sergeant York is a great cozy neighborhood bar to meet up with some friends and catch a game. When I walked into the establishment, the Philadelphia 76ers game was about to start. The bartender got everyone in the Sixers spirit by playing the downright catchy “10-9-8-76ers” theme song. The music along with the hanging fish sculpture (a Fishtown neighborhood piece recognizable by locals) gave off a sense of community and belonging. Adding to the atmosphere are the many assorted beer memorabilia items and vintage bar furnishings. Find the jukebox and Ms. Pac-Man machine in the back corner and get nostalgic eating those pixelated ghosts!
I approached the U-shaped bar centered around an old-school draft list sign to grab a seat and order a drink. Speaking of the bar, there are two TVs mounted at each corner to easily view the games being aired. A third larger TV is on the wall by a few tables if you’d like to sit down and enjoy some of their pub grub. The kitchen serves up appetizers such as a classic Caesar salad as well as sandwiches like their chick ‘n biz (fried chicken biscuit with whipped honey butter, coleslaw and pickles). Snacks and apps are half off during their happy hour from 5 – 7 PM. Also half off are the draft beers, which are all from Pennsylvania breweries. Sergeant York even has a to-go beer fridge so you can grab a few brews for the road and watch the rest of the game at home!
Maybe beer isn’t your thing? Well the unique cocktail list may be for you then. Any Philadelphian, sports fan or not, would be interested in the Nitty Gritty. Pay tribute to the big, orange fluffball we have embraced as our own, the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot Gritty! Made with Faber orange vodka, cream soda, triple sec, and a splash of OJ, this drink is just like Gritty – bright orange and not too sweet.
