Welcome to Short Order COOK, our weekly check-in with chefs around town. Every Wednesday we’re chatting with your favorite Philly chefs to find out what they’re eating, watching, cooking and what’s in their kitchen!
Keep reading to see what Rival Bros co-owner Jonathan Adams has been cooking and watching during quarantine, and to see what his top 3 pantry items are.
How can we get Rival Bros coffee right now?
Rival Bros Coffee is currently open daily from 8am to 2pm at 2400 Lombard and 1100 Tasker. Orders must be placed online (walk-up service starting soon!!) by visiting our site. Menu is coffee coffee coffee – all your favorite drinks, bags of coffee beans, plus gift cards and sweet merch.
Have you been experimenting with new ingredients or recipes in quarantine?
We have a few R&D things in the coffee lab, but on the home front I’ve been challenging myself to make due with what’s kicking around. So many people went nuts in March and bum-rushed the stores for items 🤷🏻♂️ that they didn’t really need. So I’ve been raiding the pantry and making do with whatever we have. For example, using palm sugar instead of regular sugar, coconut oil instead of butter, using up random tea bags to make fun drinks for the kids…
Any guilt pleasure foods you’re willing to tell us about?
My guilty pleasure is ice cream. I could eat it for breakfast. Not that I’ve done that…
What cookbooks would you recommend to the home cook?
I keep a few books close by. Some are for inspiration, some for quick guidance. All are excellent.
Frankie’s Spuntino: Kitchen Companion
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall: The River Cottage
Eric Ripert: A Return to Cooking
Have you watched any good tv shows recently?
Just finished two seasons of Sunderland ‘Til I Die which chronicles the aforementioned town’s professional soccer team as they battle to get promoted back into the English Premier League. Fascinating from the business side.
What’s the first place you’re heading for dinner once indoor dining resumes?
My wife Melissa had made a reservation at Fiore for my birthday which fell on that weekend just as the Mayor announced the Stay at Home Order. I was really looking forward to dining there – amazing people and amazing food!
Lastly, anything you want to let people know about?
Shoutout to my vagabond friends of many talents who have established HELP Relief Philly to cook, deliver and pay forward five-star meals to food challenged Philadelphians. Seek them out @helpreliefphilly on IG for details.
And now, let’s take a look at Jonny Mac’s favorite pantry go-to’s.

2. Diastatic Malt Powder in pizza dough for the win
3. Trader Joe’s instant chai tea latte mix is banging.
