Short Order COOK: Malik Ali

Welcome to Short Order COOK, our weekly check-in with chefs around town. Every Wednesday we’re chatting with your favorite Philly chefs to find out what they’re eating, watching, cooking and what’s in their fridge!

This week we caught up with Zagat 30 Under 30 winner and frequent COOK guest chef Malik Ali. Keep reading to see what ingredient Malik has recently fallen in love with and what he looks forward to most in the coming months.

How can people order your food right now?
I offer pick-up or drop-off catering for all events big and small. I also offer Private Chef services for small home gatherings. You can check out my Instagram @dat_chefbull which shows a bunch of my work and pop-ups around the city or email me for bookings.

Have you been experimenting with new ingredients or recipes during quarantine?
Since quarantine started I’ve been working on cooking a bit healthier than my usual soulful cuisine. Working on balancing because you can’t eat soul food every day – even though it’s so good.

Any guilty pleasure foods you’re willing to admit?
I just fell in love with Nutella to be honest. I use a good amount of it in açaí bowls and fruit shakes I make at home.

Have you binged any good TV shows or movies recently?
Lately I have been on Netflix just watching everything to the point where I just start watching random movies. One particular show I’ve watched from Season 1 is Riverdale. A lot goes on in Riverdale, LOL.

What are you most looking forward to once quarantine is fully lifted?
Really I’m just looking forward to cooking for large events again. A lot of large events were canceled due to the pandemic, my Soulful Pop-Up for example, but I’m patiently waiting for it to be lifted.

Now let’s take a peek in Malik’s fridge!
