Class Recap: A Restaurant Sneak Preview with Bloomsday

Wouldn’t it be great if there was an all day café in the city where you could get coffee, natural wine, beer, breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Imagine if they also had a skylit bottle shop in the middle of it all – now that would be something! Well, imagine no more because this perfectly describes Bloomsday Café, opening this spring in Headhouse Square. Green Engine Coffee owners Zach Morris and Kelsey Bush have had the Bloomsday project in the works for a while, but soon it will become a reality. Zach and Kelsey, with the help of Tim Kweeder who they brought in to run the wine program for Bloomsday, gave our guests a sneak peek of what their all day café. Class Recap: An Evening with Bobby Saritsoglou of Stina

I mustache you a question. Do you like Mediterranean food, wood-fired pizza and/or funky facial hair? If so you must check out Bobby Saritsoglou’s new restaurant Stina, opening soon in the Point Breeze neighborhood. Chef Bobby and his signature ‘stache came into the COOK kitchen last week to give our guests a sneak preview of what he will be serving up at his new spot. The name Stina comes from Bobby’s nickname for his wife Christina Kallas-Saritsoglou, co-founder of Philly AIDS Thrift. Christina joined Bobby at COOK to tell people about how a portion of Stina’s monthly profits will be donated to charitable causes in the area. While Stina will have a wood-fired pizza oven imported from Genoa, Bobby will also be serving Mediterranean classics such as kefta, tabouleh and more. Holiday 2018 Pop-Ups: Machine Shop Boulangerie & Aurora Grace Chocolates

Better get started on that shopping if you haven’t already! Baked goods, chocolates and candies make “sweet” holiday gifts for anyone left on your list.  That’s precisely why we’re hosting two holiday pop-ups. This Sunday, December 16th from 10am – 2pm (or until sold out) Machine Shop Boulangerie, a South Philly French-inspired bakery, will have fresh breads and pastries for sale at COOK. Then, on Friday, December 21st from 11am – 3pm (or until sold out) we’ll have Aurora Grace Chocolates in to sell fresh pastries as well as chocolates and macarons.

Besides being great gifts, these treats and breads from Machine Shop and Aurora Grace are great additions to any holiday feast, with no kitchen hassle for you! Class Recap: Winkel Sneak Preview with Joncarl Lachman

Brunch fans rejoice! Chef, restaurateur and veteran COOK instructor Joncarl Lachman is opening a new breakfast and lunch spot in Center City. The restaurant will occupy the recently closed More Than Just Ice Cream space at 12th and Locust Streets. As for its name, Joncarl chose Winkel, which means ‘little shop’ in Dutch. Winkel will serve breakfast and lunch to start with the possibility of dinner service in the future. In addition to interesting Dutch-influenced breakfast dishes, Winkel will offer numerous soups as well as fresh, house-baked bread. Talk about comfort food! Joncarl treated sixteen eager COOK guests to a sneak preview of his restaurant with some dishes that will be on the menu at Winkel. Now Open: Yards Brewery and Taphouse

Yesterday, Yards Brewing Company opened their new brewpub and production facility at 5th & Spring Garden Streets. Doors opened at 6PM, and Philadelphians flocked to the craft beer heaven. We at COOK are so happy for our friends at Yards, plus we’re excited to see Chef Jim Burke back in action, this time overseeing the culinary side of things at Yards.

COOK Restaurant Sneak Peek: coZara

Last week, COOK was thrilled to host a sneak peek of Hiroyuki “Zama” Tanaka’s soon-to-open University City restaurant, coZara (meaning “small plates” in Japanese).

Zama has come far in his three-plus years on 19th Street on Rittenhouse Square, and his Zama is one of the city’s go-to spots for sushi. Now,  Zama is on the move with a second restaurant. This December, he is set to open a 140-seat, two-story Japanese restaurant whose menu will include yakitori, noodles and dumplings.

The lucky 16 guests at Zama’s class last week got a special, early taste of the menu which was not only beautiful but delicious as well. Below are the menu as well as photos by Yoni Nimrod for COOK.
