Holiday 2018 Pop-Ups: Machine Shop Boulangerie & Aurora Grace Chocolates

Better get started on that shopping if you haven’t already! Baked goods, chocolates and candies make “sweet” holiday gifts for anyone left on your list.  That’s precisely why we’re hosting two holiday pop-ups. This Sunday, December 16th from 10am – 2pm (or until sold out) Machine Shop Boulangerie, a South Philly French-inspired bakery, will have fresh breads and pastries for sale at COOK. Then, on Friday, December 21st from 11am – 3pm (or until sold out) we’ll have Aurora Grace Chocolates in to sell fresh pastries as well as chocolates and macarons.

Besides being great gifts, these treats and breads from Machine Shop and Aurora Grace are great additions to any holiday feast, with no kitchen hassle for you! Class Recap: Wine + Swine: Lazio Edition with Mitch Skwer + Nick Macri

Wine and swine – so good together, they even rhyme! This week we welcomed the dynamic duo, Nick Macri of La Divisa Meats and Mitch Skwer of The Wine Merchant, into COOK for another edition of their wildly popular wine and swine dinner. Our guests were carried off to the southern Italian region that is home to Rome and bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea – Lazio! Chef-turned-butcher Nick Macri highlighted cuisine traditional to the region while explaining the differences between Lazio and the rest of Italy. While “Meat Man Macri” was cooking up each course in front of our 16 guests, Mitch poured out and described the Lazio wine pairing he chose for each dish. Class Recap: Winkel Sneak Preview with Joncarl Lachman

Brunch fans rejoice! Chef, restaurateur and veteran COOK instructor Joncarl Lachman is opening a new breakfast and lunch spot in Center City. The restaurant will occupy the recently closed More Than Just Ice Cream space at 12th and Locust Streets. As for its name, Joncarl chose Winkel, which means ‘little shop’ in Dutch. Winkel will serve breakfast and lunch to start with the possibility of dinner service in the future. In addition to interesting Dutch-influenced breakfast dishes, Winkel will offer numerous soups as well as fresh, house-baked bread. Talk about comfort food! Joncarl treated sixteen eager COOK guests to a sneak preview of his restaurant with some dishes that will be on the menu at Winkel. Class Recap: Cuba Cooks with Guillermo Pernot

Guillermo Pernot, Chef/Partner of Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar, came into COOK last week to showcase his newest cookbook Cuba Cooks. Not only did Guillermo cook up five courses of Cuban-inspired dishes from his book, but he also signed a copy for each of our guests to go home with and enjoy! Guillermo was awarded the James Beard Award for best single subject for his last cookbook, ¡Ceviche!: Seafood, Salads and Cocktails with a Latino Twist, so we are so excited to have his latest book. Read on to see some of the dishes from Cuba Cooks come to life and learn a bit about Cuban cuisine as well.

Class Recap: An Evening With Aaron Gottesman Of Oyster House

Thursday night we had a dinner fit for any true seafood lover from the crew at Oyster House. To start, Chef Aaron Gottesman wooed our guests with a sampling of east coast and west coast oysters while third generation owner Sam Mink provided background on all things oysters. From the difference between east and west coast varieties, the nutritional benefits they provide, and their growth cycle, Sam’s knowledge of oysters is extensive and impressive. Read on to learn more and see what else Aaron cooked up for this seafood feast!

Class Recap: Día de los Muertos with Dionicio Jimenez and Matt Polzin of El Rey

How do scorpion tacos sound? Would you be willing to try tongue or brain? Well, this past Saturday sixteen adventurous COOK guests did exactly that by enjoying a sneak preview of El Rey‘s Día de Muertos dishes. From Monday, October 29th to Sunday, November 4th, Chef Dionicio Jimenez will be serving cuisine traditionally served during the holiday celebration of the dead in Mexican households. With a bit of liquid encouragement from Beverage Director Matt Polzin, many guests cleaned their plates while learning about Día de los Muertos. Read on to see how Dionicio’s curiosity-invoking menu played out and get Matt Polzin’s Corpse Reviver #4 recipe, perfect for upcoming holiday festivities!
