As an industry worker zipping around on your feet for hours, the best part of the day is enjoying a shift drink: a post-work alcoholic beverage to decompress, take a load off, and yes, enjoy a nice buzz before heading home to bed. In this series, we’ll be exploring the many fantastic bar programs of Philadelphia where you can treat yourself after a hard days work. This special edition features an outdoor garden that just popped up!
The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society is a nonprofit organization that does some fantastic work transforming our urban landscape into a more lively space through gardening. With programs such as the iconic Philadelphia Flower Show and Pop Up Gardens, PHS is able to fund other projects from neighborhood gardens to planting trees across the tri-state area. In this edition of Shift Drink we head to the PHS Pop Up Garden at 15th and South Streets to see what’s in store this summer!
As I walked down 15th Street nearing the pop up garden, the stretch of trees, flowers and greenery wedged between two buildings immediately caught my eye. The garden on South Street opens at 5 o’clock during the week, making it a perfect post-work destination to enjoy drinks with friends. There are several seating areas, featuring tree stumps, covered lounge areas, tables and benches, plus two bars serving Tito’s Vodka and Hendrick’s Gin cocktails, several beers on tap, and margaritas. When I arrived, Tito’s and Hendricks cocktails were on special, including the “Woodermelon” cocktail featuring, you guessed it, Tito’s and watermelon. Towards the back is where you’ll find the food, run by a collective crew from Royal Tavern, Khyber Pass Pub, Cantina Los Caballitos, Triangle Tavern and Royal Boucherie. The eclectic menu which features creative snacks (buffalo popcorn anyone?), salads, sandwiches and grilled fare can be seen here on PHS’s website.
With food, drinks and plenty of landscaping to brighten up your day, the PHS garden on 15th and South is an urban oasis that has something for everyone. Go unwind after a long day at work – and bring your dog – and enjoy the nice weather that is finally upon us!
