Shift Drink: Prohibition Taproom

As an industry worker zipping around on your feet all day, the best part of the day is enjoying a shift drink: a post-work alcoholic beverage to decompress, take a load off, and yes, enjoy a nice buzz before heading home. In this series, we’ll be exploring the many fantastic bar programs of Philadelphia where you can treat yourself after a hard day’s work. For this edition, I visited Prohibition Taproom.

ProTap-BeerLocated in the Spring Arts neighborhood on 13th Street, Prohibition is a pioneer in an otherwise undersaturated section of the city. For 11 years now, ProTap (as it’s affectionately called) has served delicious beer (and food!) to the people that either call that stretch home or venture that direction for a show at Underground ArtsUnion Transfer or PhilaMOCA. Or in my case, a post-work beverage and snack.

ProTapWith a name that includes the word “taproom,” you better have a solid beer list. With three ciders and ten beers on draft, I’m confident anyone can find something they like. My buddy and I opted for a little local love by grabbing the Neshaminy Creek Croydon Cream and Highwater Hefe. Both are on the lighter side and lower in alcohol (they weigh in at 4.2% and 5.2% respectively) – perfect for throwing more than one back. If brews aren’t your speed, stay tuned… General Manager Amy Hartranft (who also heads up Philly Cider Week) and Bar Manager Nicole Testa (formerly of Bar Hygge) are hard at work developing the next round of drinks and it should be available within the next couple of weeks.

Go for the beer batter green beans, stay for the fish and chips. If you’ve never eaten here, you’ll be in for a treat. With temperatures dropping outside, their comfort food-laden menu will hit the spot. You’ll find chicken galore (including a gluten-free fried chicken night on Tuesdays), mac and cheese, flat iron steak and a burger that rivals the best in the city. Executive Chef Brian Gowen follows in the footsteps of a few notable names and keeps the pub feel going strong with the menu. Cheers!
